Original Watermen Joins Encinitas Junior Lifeguard Program for Third Consecutive Year
Popular Southern California-based lifeguard, surf company Original Watermen kicks off the summer with the City of Encinitas Junior Lifeguards
ENCINITAS, CA -- (June 10, 2013) -- Original Watermen, a nationally recognized supplier of apparel in the lifeguard and action sports industries, will be heading to the Encinitas YMCA beginning this June for the first Encinitas Junior Lifeguard swim test of the season.
Original Watermen supplies the Encinitas Junior Guards with lifeguard board shorts, hoodies, hats, tees and other apparel. The company offers the same quality and comfort for the Junior Guard organization as for professional lifeguards.
"Working with the city of Encinitas keeps us tied with the community in a positive way," said Jeff Jones, Brand Ambassador. "It's awesome working with such a great program that provides a fundamental basis to mold the city’s kids into future watermen.”
The Encinitas Junior Lifeguard program focuses on the importance of educating local youth on professional lifesaving skills – engaging them in various ocean and water activities such as swimming, surfing, body surfing, snorkeling and water competitions. In its 23rd year, the Encinitas Junior Guard program is a Moonlight Beach tradition, training on the same sand as the city's lifeguard headquarters.
Original Watermen and the City of Encinitas Junior Lifeguard program share the excitement of building a lifestyle in and around the water, and introducing this to future lifeguards. For youth ranging from nine to seventeen years old, the program requires all participants to pass a swim test consisting of an underwater breath hold, a timed 100-yard swim, a short underwater swim and the ability to tread water for three minutes, in their first year. In addition to the City of Encinitas, Original Watermen also works with over 2,000 organizations worldwide, including local city and state agencies, and ranging to military Special Forces. Locally, the company works closely with the City of Oceanside, Los Angeles County, San Diego Lifeguard Services, California State Junior Lifeguards Carlsbad, City of Coronado and Camp Pendleton Lifeguards, among others.
In the last two years, Original Watermen more than tripled sales in retail and mail-order with its surf-inspired clothing. Original Watermen, Inc. owns the trademarks Original Watermen, Watermen, Waterman and Earn Your Salt. In the past year, the company also signed several local, Southern California surfers to their own Original Watermen Surf Team and sponsors the Carlsbad Surf Team. ABOUT ORIGINAL WATERMEN
Like so many great things in the ‘80s, Original Watermen started in the back of a VW bus. Surfer and lifeguard, Ken Miller and future wife Jen, began making and selling water trunks. The first customers were Carlsbad, CA locals and eventually the State of California lifeguards signed up for 36 red shorts. Since those early days, Original Watermen has evolved and grown, now outfitting over 1,900 organizations from local and state agency lifeguards and fire fighters to military Special Forces. Original Watermen, as a company, was created with a solitary vision: provide the best quality, fit, and performance in every garment.
