Our Story

1979. Carlsbad State Beach, CA. Lifeguards crowded around the back of a ’72 VW Camper van as two coworkers, Ken Miller and Jennifer Stevenson, showed off their answer to their uniform’s uncomfortable and flimsy swim trunks. Quick-drying, soft to the touch and of course, bright red, Ken and Jen’s home-sewn shorts quickly impressed. By the end of that fateful afternoon, Ken and Jen received an order for 48 of their trunks and the company that would become Watermen was born. 

Despite starting as total newcomers in a competitive industry, Ken and Jen’s dedication to crafting lifeguard gear redefined expectations. Their innovative and high-quality designs soon caught the attention of lifeguard agencies beyond Carlsbad, leading to partnerships with lifeguard organizations nationwide and elite rescue teams like the U.S. Special Forces and Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers.

Today, Watermen continues to lead the industry in aquatic apparel, serving water professionals worldwide.
