The Lifeguard Bikini Swimsuit Guide

This lifeguard bikini swimsuit guide is all about helping you choose the right lifeguard bikini top and bikini bottom—one that balances style with functionality, support with comfort, and durability with fit.

Being a lifeguard is about more than just staying cool in the sun—it’s about readiness, resilience, and performance. Whether you're standing watch on a busy beach, training in the pool, or simply clocking out and catching a few waves, your swimsuit needs to work as hard as you do. For many women, a bikini is the go-to choice. But not just any bikini will do.

When searching for your perfect lifeguard bikini, there are dozens of different factors to consider, however we think these are the most important:

  • Coverage: From full-coverage tops to minimal cuts, the right style depends on your comfort and your work environment. Sports bra styles or tankinis for extra support and a modest fit. Scoop necklines or high-waisted bottoms for a flattering, secure look.
  • Support: Bikinis are often available with or without a built-in bra, or underbust band but which option is best for you? Shelf bras and underbust bands provide added support and comfort, making them ideal for active use and a polished, professional appearance.
  • Strap Type: Adjustable straps give you flexibility and a customizable fit—especially great for long shifts. Fixed straps can provide a clean, simple design with fewer pressure points.
  • 4-Way Stretch: Can your two piece lifeguard swimsuit withstand the unpredictable nature of the job? Stretchier fabrics are generally more comfortable and able to take brutal conditions in stride, with the added benefit of being quick-drying, too.
  • Durability: Saltwater, chlorine, sand, sun. Each of these environmental factors can wreak havoc on your gear, which is why choosing the most durable option is better for you and your wallet.
  • Customer Service: Decide that you don’t like the bikini you ordered, and want to try another product? Or did you get the wrong size and need to exchange it ASAP? Make sure the company you bought your gear from has a comprehensive Return Policy like we do.

Most importantly choose styles that stay in place while you're moving—no distractions while you're scanning or rescuing.

Should You Size Up or Down in a Bikini?

The beauty of bikinis is that they can be mixed and matched to suit your body type.

Lifeguard Bikini Swimsuit Guide Tips:

  • Size up if you have a larger bust or bottom to prevent uncomfortable pinching or strain.
  • Size down for a tighter, compressive fit that’s perfect for lap swimming or training.
  • Choose adjustable straps or tie-back options for better flexibility.
  • Watermen bikini bottoms all come with inner drawcords for extra security—ideal for rough surf or active rescues.

If you’re unsure how tight is too tight, the rule of thumb is this: it should be snug, but never dig in or restrict your movement. If it shifts when you move—or leaves red marks when you take it off—it’s time to adjust.

Can Lifeguards Wear Bikinis?

This is a question we hear often—and the answer depends on your employer’s dress code and regional regulations. Many beach patrols and private pool organizations do allow bikinis, especially those designed specifically for active use. That said, it’s always best to check with your supervisor or organization before showing up in a two-piece.

If bikinis are allowed, there’s no reason you can’t be both professional and comfortable in the right suit. Watermen lifeguard bikinis are designed for action—they’re secure, flattering, and made to withstand the job.

What Size Lifeguard Bikini Swimsuit Should I Buy?

The most important detail for finding the perfect fit, is a couple simple measurements. Important measurements include the chest, hip, and waist. Sizing of bikini swimsuits begin with youth sizes YS-YL, and range from XS-4X. Look at our comparison charts to see what styles are offered in your size. We recommend using our size chart to find the right size for your measurements.

What Is The Difference Between Elite and Original Watermen Bikini Swimsuits?

Our elite fabric is made out of 100% recycled polyester and is 5 star chlorine proof. This is our premium quality fabric that offers maximum engineering support and is designed for a longer lifespan. If you plan on being in the pool for hours a day then we recommend our elite swimsuits. In the comparison charts look for the chlorine proof icon.

The original fabric is made out of 78% Recycled Polyester and 22% Elastane. These suits don’t necessarily imply lower quality, but rather a more standard or less specialized construction. This fabric is chlorine resistant and 4 star chlorine proof. The “original” fabric is a bit more stretchy, and fast-drying.  In the comparison charts look for the chlorine resistant icon.
