The Lifeguard One-Piece Swimsuit Guide
This lifeguard one-piece swimsuit guide is all about fit, style, and function to ensure you find the perfect one-piece swimsuit—on and off the clock. Whether you're suiting up for lifeguard duty, hitting the beach, or training in the pool, the one-piece swimsuit remains a go-to staple for women of all body types.
From full-coverage red one-piece swimsuits to more revealing cuts, Watermen is diving into our lifeguard one-piece swimsuit guide on everything you need to know about fit, coverage, usage—and how to choose the right style for you.
When searching for your perfect one piece, there are dozens of different factors to consider, however we think these are the most important:
- Coverage: The one-piece swimsuit has gone from classic utility to fashion must-have. Whether you want bold, revealing one-piece styles or durable full coverage suits for lifeguard duty, knowing your fit and needs will help you make the right pick.
- Shelf-Bra: One-piece swimsuits are often available with or without a built-in bra, but which option is best for you? Shelf bras provide added support and comfort, making them ideal for active use and a polished, professional appearance.
- 4-Way Stretch: Can your one-piece withstand the unpredictable nature of the job? Stretchier fabrics are generally more comfortable and able to take brutal conditions in stride, with the added benefit of being quick-drying, too.
- Durability: Saltwater, chlorine, sand, sun. Each of these environmental factors can wreak havoc on your gear, which is why choosing the most durable option is better for you and your wallet.
- Customer Service: Decide that you don’t like the trunks you ordered, and want to try another product? Or did you get the wrong size and need to exchange it ASAP? Make sure the company you bought your gear from has a comprehensive Return Policy like we do.
What size Lifeguard One-Piece Swimsuit should I buy?
The most important detail for finding the perfect fit, is a couple simple measurements. Important measurements include the chest, hip, and waist. A common mistake made by first time shoppers, is to associate your waist size with the one-piece swimsuit sizes. This will most likely lead to purchasing a swimsuit that is too small. Sizing of one-piece swimsuits typically are provided in even sizes, beginning with youth sizes 20, 22, 24 and range up extended sizes 44, 46, 48, and 50. These sizes usually align closely with your chest measurement. We recommend using our size chart to find the right size for your measurements.
Should You Size Up or Down in One Piece?
When it comes to one-pieces, fit is everything. Unlike bikinis, where you can mix and match sizes, a one-piece has to fit your torso length, bust, hips, and waist—all in one.
Lifeguard One-Piece Swimsuit Guide Tips:
- Size up if you’re tall or have a long torso (to avoid shoulder or crotch strain).
- Size down if you prefer a compressive, sport-style fit (great for lap swimming).
- Choose adjustable straps or tie-back options (like a one-piece tie) for better flexibility.
How tight should a one-piece swimsuit be? A swimsuit that’s too tight may dig in and restrict movement, while one that’s too loose might gap or shift while you're active. Depending on the fabric, there is usually a little room for the swimsuit to stretch after repeated use, so a snug, but comfortable fit, is recommended. A swimsuit that already feels loose before entering the water, will most likely be problematic in the future.
Do Lifeguards Have to Wear One-Piece Swimsuits?
In many organizations, especially in the U.S., lifeguards are required to wear one-piece red swimsuits—often called a “one-piece red force” or “guard suit.” These suits are chosen for:
- Professionalism and uniformity
- Full coverage during active duties
- Durability in chlorinated or saltwater environments
Common buyers include pools, aquatic centers, waterparks, and summer camps—where it's all about function over fashion, but you can still look great doing your job. Check with your organization to see if they require you to wear a one-piece swimsuit. If so, Watermen offers a range of coverage, styles, and fits to ensure you’ll be looking your best on and off duty. Check out our Lifeguard one-piece swimsuit guide below!

What Is The Difference Between Elite and Original Watermen One Piece Swimsuits?
Our elite fabric is made out of 100% recycled polyester and is 5 star chlorine proof. This is our premium quality fabric that offers maximum engineering support and is designed for a longer lifespan. If you plan on being in the pool for hours a day then we recommend our elite swimsuits. In the comparison chart look for the chlorine proof icon.
The original fabric is made out of 78% Recycled Polyester and 22% Elastane. These suits don’t necessarily imply lower quality, but rather a more standard or less specialized construction. This fabric is chlorine resistant and 4 star chlorine proof. The “original” fabric is a bit more stretchy, and fast-drying. In the comparison chart look for the chlorine resistant icon.
