What To Bring On Your First Day As A Lifeguard
Starting your first day as a lifeguard? That’s a big deal! Whether you’re guarding a chill community pool, a bustling water park, or the wide-open beach, you’re stepping into an important role — and yes, it's totally normal to feel both excited and a little nervous.
Because showing up like a pro beats winging it! Here’s a checklist of essentials to make sure you’re ready to dive into your first day:
Day One Lifeguard Necessities: Uniform & ID
Your uniform might be provided, but don’t count on changing last-minute in the parking lot. Show up ready to go, or at least packed to change quickly.
Here’s what to bring:
- Swimsuit (make sure it’s the right color and style for your facility)
- Guard shirt, hat, or whistle (if they have already given it to you)
- Employee ID or any onboarding paperwork
- A change of clothes for after your shift — or even an extra swimsuit, just in case!
Rescue Gear
Some spots will supply everything, but others expect you to come with your own essentials. Check ahead and be prepared with:
- Rescue tube or buoy
- CPR mask
- First Aid Supplies (basic kit or what they recommend)
- Hip pack or fanny Pack (you’ll carry your essentials while on duty)
- Whistle (bring a couple — they mysteriously disappear )
- Fins (especially important for beach or deep water guards)
Even on day one, lifeguarding is no walk in the park.
Wear Your Sun Protection!
If you're working outdoors, sun safety isn't optional — it’s critical. You’ll thank yourself later when you're not sunburned and exhausted.
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+ — remember to reapply regularly!)
- Polarized sunglasses (helps cut glare so you can actually see into the water)
- Wide brim hat or visor (no one wants a burnt scalp or nose)
- Sun Shirt or Rash Guard (extra layer = extra protection)
- Lip balm with SPF (burnt lips are the worse)
Nobody wants to be a passed out lifeguard on day one!
Hydration and snacks are a must!
- A big water bottle (32 oz+ — drink consistently throughout your shift)
- Healthy snacks like granola bars, fruit, trail mix — anything easy to grab when you get a break
- Electrolyte drinks or packets for those long, hot days
Towel and Personal Items
You want to feel fresh and comfortable — not soggy and dragging.
Bring these to stay chill:
- Quick-dry towel
- Flip-flops or water-resistant sandals (you’ll be on your feet a lot!)
- Lock for a locker, if provided
- Personal hygiene items: deodorant, hairbrush, hair ties, etc.
Watermen Tips:
Come with a positive attitude, stay alert, and be ready to learn. Whether it’s your first summer or your fifth, your energy helps create a safe, welcoming vibe for both guests and your team.
Also, don’t be shy — reach out to your supervisor before Day 1 to double-check what’s provided and ask them “What should I bring on my first day as a lifeguard?” It’s always better to be the over-prepared rookie than the one scrambling to borrow a whistle five minutes before their shift.
