Popular Local Lifeguard, Surf Company Original Watermen Extends Contract with City of Encinitas

Original Watermen signs two-year contract with local Junior Guard organization

CARLSBAD, CA – (April 6, 2012) – Original Watermen, a nationally recognized supplier for lifeguard professionals, recently signed a two-year contract with the City of Encinitas to supply their entire Junior Lifeguard organization.

Original Watermen will supply all Junior Guards with lifeguard boardshorts, hoodies, hats, tees and other apparel. The company offers the same quality and comfort for Junior Guards as for professional lifeguards.

“We are excited to continue working with and building a strong tie with the City of Encinitas, especially working closely with the Junior Guard organization,” said Ken Miller, founder of Original Watermen. “Junior Lifeguards provides a fun and safe aquatic education for the youth of Encinitas and surrounding cities through swimming, surfing and teaching ocean safety.”

The Encinitas Junior Lifeguard program hosts two- and three-week summer sessions for youth ages 9 to 17, educating participants on professional lifesaving skills and the ocean environment through various ocean and water activities such as swimming, surfing, bodysurfing, snorkeling and water competitions. Original Watermen and the City of Encinitas Junior Lifeguard program share the excitement of building a lifestyle in and around the water, and introducing this to future lifeguards.

Along with the City of Encinitas Junior Lifeguards, Original Watermen also works with over 1,900 organizations worldwide, including local city and state agencies, and ranging to military Special Forces. Locally, the company works closely with the City of Oceanside, Los Angeles County, San Diego Lifeguard Services, California State Junior Lifeguards Carlsbad, City of Coronado and Camp Pendleton Lifeguards, among others. Several agencies on the East Coast are also sporting Original Watermen shorts, swimsuits and apparel.

In 2011, Original Watermen tripled sales in retail and mail-order with its surf-inspired clothing and expects major growth in all areas of the company for the upcoming year. Original Watermen, Inc. owns the trademarks Original Watermen, Watermen, Waterman and Earn Your Salt. In the past year, the company also signed several local, Southern California surfers to their own Original Watermen Surf Team and sponsors the Carlsbad Surf Team.

“Because the brand is just now being discovered, Watermen is a hot sale in the grom market,” said Miller. “We have had major growth in all areas across the board in both the lifeguard industry and the mail-order/retail Watermen market.”

Like so many great things in the ‘80s, Original Watermen started in the back of a VW bus. Surfer and lifeguard, Ken Miller and future wife Jen, began making and selling water trunks. The first customers were Carlsbad, CA locals and eventually the State of California lifeguards signed up for 36 red shorts. Since those early days, Original Watermen has evolved and grown, now outfitting over 1,900 organizations from local and state agency lifeguards and fire fighters to military Special Forces. Original Watermen, as a company, was created with a solitary vision: provide the best quality, fit, and performance in every garment.
