Original Watermen Sponsors Julia Garcia in Molokai 2 Oahu SUP Race

Original Watermen recently sponsored Julia Garcia in the Molokai 2 Oahu SUP Race where she placed third.

Julia Garcia, a well-known women's stand-up paddleboard racer, recently took third place in the Molokai 2 Oahu SUP Race where she was sponsored by Original Watermen. According to Garcia, the race was very difficult due to extreme heat in the channel. Garcia noted, "Given the mishaps and terrible conditions I'm just glad I finished. It's being named by far one of the hardest conditions the race has seen. A total of 19 people dropped out and that set a record for the race DNFs. Most people added an hour or longer onto their race times from last year."

She spoke about her own struggles during the long race in a recent interview. "As I pulled through port lock it was breaking eight to ten feet, so I carefully picked a shoulder to make my way in on. I saw the girl in second and I was quickly making ground on her. I went to catch a wave that would have pushed me back up but once I dropped in my board slid out of my hands and went in! I had to do a 300-yard swim before retrieving it and at that point I lost the progress I had made moving into second place."

However, Garcia has nothing but praise for the race itself, even though it may be a grueling endurance course for most racers. "The race is one of the most challenging and it is an honor to compete. Although I'm exhausted still and can't believe I finished that race, I'll be back for another round. Hopefully I'll have the downwind swell I was hoping for." The Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard World Championship is a 32-mile open-ocean channel race between two Hawaiian islands.
